Solo developer Pace Smith releases her debut title Compass Rose, a lateral-thinking puzzle game designed to give you a “Eureka!” moment, for free on the web.
Most puzzle games give you a clear set of rules and challenge you to apply them in interesting ways. Compass Rose instead challenges you to figure out what the rules are. Each sequence of puzzles has an obvious-but-misleading solution. When that breaks down, you must rethink everything you know to find the subtle-but-correct solution. An extensive in-game hint system helps you get unstuck without spoilers, and makes the game accessible to puzzlers of varying skill levels.
“That was one of the most amazing things ever… the eureka moment was perfect.” -NoTimeToBelieve, playtester
“The west puzzle is absolutely genius – if you’re feeling frustrated, be patient and trust that it’s very elegant and worth your time.” -Nepsolbee, playtester
“The game is super unique, surprisingly grand, and does a great job feeling fair despite being about lateral thinking” -trevnewt, playtester
Pace Smith is a new solo indie developer who cares about innovation and kindness. She made her first video game when she was 8 years old, took a very long break for no good reason, and is now back in the game game at 41. She is a pansexual polyamorous transgender Sufi and an intersectional feminist, so expect to see some of those themes come up when she creates a game with a more in-depth plot.
