Fortnite creator Epic Games takes on Apple and Google Epic's store went live earlier this month with PC and Mac games, which caused rival Steam to adjust its pricing to remain competitive. Epic plans to start selling Android games in 2019.

"Fortnite" creator EpicGames is launching its own app store that will let developers keep 88% of revenue compared to the 70% for the app stores from Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL).

App stores account for about 5% of total annual revenue for Apple and Google, according to Visibly Alpha data, but the margins are much higher since the companies don't carry any of the app costs.
