KaOS announces the availability of the June release of a new stable ISO.

Just days after Plasma 5.13.1 was announced can you already see it on this new release. Highlights of Plasma 5.13include optimising startup and minimising memory usage, yielding faster time-to-desktop, better runtime performance, and less memory consumption. System Settings with KDE’s Kirigami framework gives the pages a slick new look. KWin gained much-improved effects for blur and desktop switching. Wayland work continued, with the return of window rules, the use of high priority EGL Contexts, and initial support for screencasts and desktop sharing. And a tech preview of GTK global menu integration.

This ISO has a complete redesign of the Midna theme for 2018. Some 2500 new icons in use, rewritten sddm login theme and a KaOS community selected new wallpaper (created by Jomada).

All new first-run app Croeso

Also new is KaOS’ creation Croeso (Welsh for welcome) for helping with configuring a new install. It will run on the newly installed system and offers to adjust some 15 commonly used settings and replaces the formerly used, PyQt based first run wizard Kaptan. It also includes a custom Wallpaper selector, distribution info, and news. It is written in QML and fits well with the Welcome application used in the Live system. The latter now includes a fully rewritten (also in QML) Installation Guide.

As always with this rolling distribution, you will find the very latest packages for the Plasma Desktop, this includes Frameworks 5.47.0, Plasma 5.13.1, KDE Applications 18.04.2. All built on Qt 5.11.1.

New Build Server

The buildserver hardware sponsor Dezponia has provided KaOS with a new server. The old server was put into use August 2013, received a KaOS install at that time. It served as the main KaOS builder all that time, never needed a reinstall, even went through the KDE 4 to Plasma 5 transition remotely (always updated over ssh). That server had an 8 core CPU and 16 Gb of RAM. It is now re-purposed toward other duties for Dezponia.

There is an option to verify the authenticity of downloaded KaOS ISO files through GPG signature verification, see the Download page for further details and instructions.

SDDM 2018

Base of the system

Most notable major updates to the base of the system are Glib2 2.56.1, Linux 4.16.14, Pacman 5.1.0, Wayland 1.15.0, GStreamer 1.14.1, Cfitsio 3.45.0, Openmpi 3.1.0, Mesa 18.1.2, NetworkManager 1.10.10, Rust 1.26.0, Protobuf 3.5.2, Intel-ucode 20180425, OpenJDK 8u161 and Ruby 2.5.1

KaOS repositories no longer provide Qt 4. It is a good three years ago that development for Qt 4 stopped, late 2015 all support including security fixes ended. Any application that has not made the transition to Qt 5 in all this time can no longer be supported in KaOS. Either they actually are no longer maintained or their development is ignoring the implications of building on a possible insecure toolkit.

The Linux kernel has all the needed ucode build-in for a fully automated Early Microcode update.
